I remember, year after year, in my annual Personal Development Plan meeting, managers would ask me what training I wanted to do and tell me I could do anything I wanted.

And in the meantime, the “hypos” (the ‘high potential’ employees) were handheld, groomed, succession-planned, with mentoring and coaching coming out of their ears! Talk about elitist! And I wasn’t one of the elite, so I felt I was on my own.

Mastermind groups are great for peer group accountability and encouragement. They help consolidate learning, encourage problem solving, give confidence in application, and accelerate growth.
We don’t run these groups, but we try to coordinate their formation by matching up members who ask us to help them in setting one up.

Facebook groups also play a useful role in consolidating learning and encouraging progress. I’m in lots of Facebook groups, and I can testify to how much they’ve helped me in areas as diverse as learning to use specialist software, video creation, internet marketing, and cancer patient support.

You could carry on as you are…
You could get a couple of courses in the next year to tick off your CPD. It’ll cost probably around $1500-$2000.
Or maybe you’ll search for cheap training through Udemy or other online training catalogues… and still be searching for this kind of quality training in a year’s time!
Maybe you’ll google for a career coach… but you probably won’t find one who has had a long and varied Finance career. Career coaches are very good if you want advice on writing a resume or doing well in an interview, but they don’t have experience of every profession. And it’s really difficult to find experienced Finance professionals offering mentoring.
And you can look for Facebook groups for Finance professionals – I haven’t yet found any worth joining, and LinkedIn groups aren’t the same. LinkedIn groups are really topical discussion forums (at best), whereas Facebook groups are geared to providing peer-to-peer facilitated support communities.
You could go and set up your own mastermind group (you should if you can!)… but how can you get in touch with other people at the same stage as you in different companies either in a similar geographical vicinity or even online?
Maybe you hesitate at the financial commitment… but you’d readily pay similar amounts for a cable/satellite subscription or a takeaway for the family! Isn’t your career progression and personal growth more important?
